Chapter 10

“Oh, well, we’ll have to hack into her files to find out what the problem was,” Mary said when we explained what Emily and I had found out while sitting at Catherine’s dining room table. Emily looked at me and groaned.

“I told you it was going to involve something illegal.”

“If you want to make an omelette, you’re going to have to crack a few eggs,” Mary replied while Catherine hid a smile by taking a sip of the cup of tea she was drinking.

“Seriously though, there are almost certainly other ways we can find out what the problem was. I mean, asking is always an option.”

“Dear, you’ve obviously never dealt with real estate agents. They’ll lie to you just out of habit,” Mary said. “You won’t be able to ask Amelia anything and get a real answer. Besides, she certainly won’t tell you why she and Marianna were having trouble, if she’s expecting to get your business.”

“I guess, but surely someone else knows.”

“Of course they do, but this is a murder investigation. Every moment we spend trying to find out information is another moment that the murderer spends on the street rather than in jail.”

“I’d just rather it be the murderer in jail and not us,” I retorted, and Mary waved a hand away.

“Please. We’ll be fine. We haven’t been caught yet.”

“Yet” being the key word in that sentence,” Emily said, backing me up.

“Fine, well, if the two of you are going to be little babies, I’ll just have to do it myself.”

Of course, we couldn’t let this octogenarian hack an email address herself.

“No, we’re in. We just want to be on the record that we think it’s a bad idea,” I said.

“Fine, fine. I hear you. Now, let’s talk about how we’re going to do this. Someone get me a computer.”

“Wait, don’t we have to break into their offices or something?” Emily asked. “How are you going to hack her email from here?”

“Just because the two of you don’t do anything to improve your brains doesn’t mean the rest of us just sit around waiting for them to rot,” Mary said with a smile as I rolled my eyes. “I’ve been reading about hacking on the internet, and I’m fairly certain I can get into Amelia’s emails right here from this living room.”

“Great, so it’ll be super easy for the cops to track the IP address back to this apartment,” I deadpanned.

“Oh please,” Mary replied. “I’m not an idiot. Not only am I using a VPN–from a company based in Romania, which will ignore any legal requests from Australia–but I’ll also be using a second layer of IP masking technology, to make it virtually impossible to trace this back here.”

“I certainly hope you’re right Mary,” Catherine said. “After all, this is my apartment, and I’m not nearly in good enough form to go to prison. I’m afraid if the cops show up here to arrest me I’ll be forced to throw you under the bus.”

“Oh Cathy, we’ve been
