Chapter 10
âOh, well, weâll have to hack into her files to find out what the problem was,â Mary said when we explained what Emily and I had found out while sitting at Catherineâs dining room table. Emily looked at me and groaned.
âI told you it was going to involve something illegal.â
âIf you want to make an omelette, youâre going to have to crack a few eggs,â Mary replied while Catherine hid a smile by taking a sip of the cup of tea she was drinking.
âSeriously though, there are almost certainly other ways we can find out what the problem was. I mean, asking is always an option.â
âDear, youâve obviously never dealt with real estate agents. Theyâll lie to you just out of habit,â Mary said. âYou wonât be able to ask Amelia anything and get a real answer. Besides, she certainly wonât tell you why she and Marianna were having trouble, if sheâs expecting to get your business.â
âI guess, but surely someone else knows.â
âOf course they do, but this is a murder investigation. Every moment we spend trying to find out information is another moment that the murderer spends on the street rather than in jail.â
âIâd just rather it be the murderer in jail and not us,â I retorted, and Mary waved a hand away.
âPlease. Weâll be fine. We havenât been caught yet.â
âYetâ being the key word in that sentence,â Emily said, backing me up.
âFine, well, if the two of you are going to be little babies, Iâll just have to do it myself.â
Of course, we couldnât let this octogenarian hack an email address herself.
âNo, weâre in. We just want to be on the record that we think itâs a bad idea,â I said.
âFine, fine. I hear you. Now, letâs talk about how weâre going to do this. Someone get me a computer.â
âWait, donât we have to break into their offices or something?â Emily asked. âHow are you going to hack her email from here?â
âJust because the two of you donât do anything to improve your brains doesnât mean the rest of us just sit around waiting for them to rot,â Mary said with a smile as I rolled my eyes. âIâve been reading about hacking on the internet, and Iâm fairly certain I can get into Ameliaâs emails right here from this living room.â
âGreat, so itâll be super easy for the cops to track the IP address back to this apartment,â I deadpanned.
âOh please,â Mary replied. âIâm not an idiot. Not only am I using a VPNâfrom a company based in Romania, which will ignore any legal requests from Australiaâbut Iâll also be using a second layer of IP masking technology, to make it virtually impossible to trace this back here.â
âI certainly hope youâre right Mary,â Catherine said. âAfter all, this is my apartment, and Iâm not nearly in good enough form to go to prison. Iâm afraid if the cops show up here to arrest me Iâll be forced to throw you under the bus.â
âOh Cathy, weâve been
